Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) includes symptoms that can interfere in the day to day interactions of one's life. This can include a person’s ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy life activities that once gave them pleasure.

Although episodes of depression typically follow a stressful event such as death, divorce or other major life changes, there are also other factors that can be a trigger. Although we do not know the exact cause of stress, research shows that there is some connection between genetics and a stressful environment.

Depression can be seen in adults as well as children and adolescents. And can look differently for different people. According to the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorder, some signs and symptoms of depression include:

  • Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells

  • Significant changes in appetite and sleep patterns

  • Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, anxiety

  • Pessimism, indifference

  • Loss of energy, persistent lethargy

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness

  • Inability to concentrate, indecisiveness

  • Inability to take pleasure in former interests, social withdrawal

  • Unexplained aches and pains

  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide

Spring Eternal has several clinicians that have worked to successfully treat depression by implementing psychotherapy (talk therapy) techniques. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can assist clients with adjusting to the current crisis of difficulty as well as to find better ways to cope and solve current problems. Often time setting realistic goals and regaining control over one's life can help to ease the symptoms of depression. In some cases, depression may require medication. Spring Eternal does not prescribe medication, but we are able to provide referrals for clients should this be a possible option.

Although occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, there are times that the intensity is so frequent that one may have persistent and excessive worry and fear over what are commonly everyday situations. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) can cause one to avoid places or situations and/or have panic that is difficult to control.

Even though it is not understood what causes anxiety, traumatic events appear to be a strong trigger. Additionally, anxiety can be linked to other underlying health issues.

According to the DSM, anxiety can be associated with the following symptoms:

  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge

  • Being easily fatigued

  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension

  • Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless unsatisfying sleep)

As with treating depression, psychotherapy with a therapist will help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps to teach specific skills for managing worry. In turn one is able to return to activities that they were avoiding due to the anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, here are some lifestyle and home remedies that can help make a difference in managing anxiety:

  • Keep physically active. Develop a routine so that you're physically active most days of the week. Exercise is a powerful stress reducer. It may improve your mood and help you stay healthy. Start out slowly and gradually increase the amount and intensity of your activities.

  • Make sleep a priority. Do what you can to make sure you're getting enough sleep to feel rested. If you aren't sleeping well, see your doctor.

  • Use relaxation techniques. Visualization techniques, meditation and yoga are examples of relaxation techniques that can ease anxiety.

  • Eat healthy. Healthy eating — such as focusing on vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish — may be linked to reduced anxiety, but more research is needed.

  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs. These substances can worsen anxiety.

  • Quit smoking and cut back or quit drinking coffee. Both nicotine and caffeine can worsen anxiety.
